My name is Becky and I am a third year sociology student at Lancaster University. I am doing a dissertation on dating websites for people with disabilities and wondering if any members of Disabled Passions would be willing to fill in a short questionnaire about their involvement on the site. It would be really, really helpful because as usual I have left my work until the last minute. All answers would be used anonymously and I would be happy to email you a write up of my findings. Here is the questionnaire: Please email me the answers if you are interested, or post them on here
1)Why did you join this specific dating website?
2)Are you a member of any other dating websites? Why? /Why not? Which ones?
3)What do you like most about this website?
4)What attracts you to interaction with other members of this specific site?
5)Have you had any good or bad experiences/dates with people you have met on the site?
6)What is your experience of this way of dating as compared to other ways of dating?
Hope to hear from you soon!
Kind Regards, Becky

`Hi Becky, I hope I'm not too late to answer this. But I've just joined this site and have been looking around at it and came across your request. I hope these answers will help.
1) I like the variety of choices on this site as there is a group that fits my specific needs.
2)I have been on other sites, including one for disabilities. It's a site with offices in Gibraltar. They require a credit card and they charge to your account whether you make contacts or have dates or not. Needless to say, I don't belong to it anymore and it is sort of complicated to leave that site. If you want to "unsubscribe" the directions are not at all obvious.
3) I like the variety and choice of options that are available to describe yourself and those you want to meet.
4) Not sure I quite understand way your question is worded, but I think it's the fact there are pictures of most members as well as descriptions such as favorite food, whether smoker or not, and health issues. That way, if two people should chance to meet, the awkward, "I have to tell you about something about me...." isn't an issue.
5) I'm very new to this site so I haven't yet had any experiences. I hope that changes soon!!
6) I'm relatively new to online dating, but compared to the more conventional ways, it gives you a wider variety of choices of interesting partners and friends, although they may not be "just around the corner" from you. That's compared to only dating local people.'
I hope this helps and good luck with your dissertation!
Bill

`Had to cut and paste to not catch the other post.
I realize she is not here but for others to compare notes in the future.....
1)Why did you join this specific dating website?
====Because I have a disability and I find that 'birds of a feather flock together' is more than just a cute phrase.
2)Are you a member of any other dating websites? Why? /Why not? Which ones?
====Too many to list but they have theirs set up where they lure you in claiming FREE! FREE! FREE! and then when you contact some one, you must 'upgrade' which means they will charge -both- of you $39.95/ mo. in order to email back and forth.
People at other 'normal' sites tend to be nasty towards those with disabilities, once they discover it.
Some people are touchy about their condition and do not need others taunting them about it.
I've seen none of that here!
At yet other sites there are no live people. Just machines churning out spam. I am the only live person in a few it seems... but I post regularly to seek pen pal... which I find, here, there is an abundance.
3)What do you like most about this website?
====They have a real live person at the 'contact us' spot. Most all sites have text robots & mechano FAQs (interactive 'help' programs that send you into endless loops). They won't call a live person unless you give the machinery a real rough time.
3b
Also there seems to be where everyone has their own problems and so we are all in the same boat. We have common interests and hurdles.
4)What attracts you to interaction with other members of this specific site?
===== see 3b)
5)Have you had any good or bad experiences/dates with people you have met on the site?
==== aside from some confusion and some technical snarl, no bad experiences, but then I am new and not in a position to do much past pen pal'ing.
6)What is your experience of this way of dating as compared to other ways of dating?
==== [For me] it is more convenient.
I am not in a position to go out to some social club physically.
My condition (house bound) and my hours make it better to hob nob here,...with people I can relate to.
I seek mainly a pen pal since I do not think a physical meet-up is practical in my case.
Some people would prefer that as well, since they may be sensitive about their own condition... even though I would not find them 'inferior' or something.
Here we have the option of being just text on a screen if so wished.
I am used to my self being as I am, so in my own case .... eh!
I cannot assume that for everyone.
